Wedding Cake Serving Calculator: Guests, Reserve and Display Cake
Calculate planned cake portions and additional servings from guest count, staff meals, a chosen reserve and baker-confirmed display-cake yield.
Sources and methods reviewed October 3, 2026. Tools use your inputs; survey figures retain their original observation years.
The number of portions you need and the cake's appearance are separate decisions. This wedding cake serving calculator estimates your planned portions, then subtracts the display cake's baker-confirmed yield to show any additional servings needed.
It does not estimate yield from diameter, tiers or photographs. Portion dimensions, recipe, cake height and cutting method differ. Ask the baker to confirm the number of portions for the actual design.
Calculate cake portions
Example only. Serving yield comes from your baker's portion guide, not the number of tiers. Entries stay in this page.
Total portions to arrange
125 for diners + 5 extra + 0 set aside.
Additional portions beyond your display cake: 50.
Copy or view CSV
The starting example uses 120 guests, five staff/vendor meals, 100% planned participation, five reserve portions and 80 portions from the display cake. That creates a plan for 130 portions, with 50 additional portions beyond the display cake. These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not a recommended cake size.

Choose the attendance assumptions
Start with the people who will be offered cake. Include vendor or staff meals only if dessert is part of their agreed meal. Avoid counting those people both in the guest total and the staff field.
The participation percentage is your planning assumption about how many diners receive cake. The tool does not predict what guests will eat. Other desserts, timing, preferences and service format may affect your plan, but no measured attendance-to-cake conversion is supplied here.
For a first estimate, discuss a full-count scenario with the baker and caterer. If you choose fewer portions than diners, make that tradeoff explicit and agree on how dessert will be served.
Separate reserve and saved portions
Reserve servings cover the additional portions you choose to have available. There is no universal correct reserve percentage in this tool.
Saved servings are portions you intend to keep out of guest service. If you are saving part of the edible cake, include that quantity here so it is not silently counted twice. Ask the baker whether the proposed saved piece affects their stated guest-serving yield.
The calculator rounds planned dining portions up to a whole serving, then adds reserve and saved portions. It subtracts the display cake's entered yield and floors additional servings at zero.
Confirm the display cake's actual yield
Give the baker the design, intended portion style and the person or team who will cut it. Request a confirmed yield and serving instructions for that proposal.
A decorative tier may not be edible. An edible tier saved for later may not be available for guest service. A dramatic-looking design does not establish the number of usable portions.
The cake statistics article reports cake-vendor hiring, cake cutting and published category spending. Those survey measures do not specify a standard tier size, portion chart or cake budget for your event.
Plan additional dessert as a service
If the calculator shows additional servings, ask the baker about the appropriate option: a larger display cake, kitchen cake, cupcakes or another dessert. Price each option as a complete service rather than assuming a kitchen cake automatically costs less.
Confirm transport, setup, temperature/storage requirements, cutting, plating and distribution with the suppliers responsible. The venue, caterer and baker may have different responsibilities.
Use the catering menu worksheet to keep the cake plan aligned with other desserts. Ask how dietary requests can be handled, who collects the necessary information and what the supplier can confirm for those requests. This arithmetic tool cannot determine ingredient suitability.
Compare complete bakery proposals
Ask for the confirmed number of portions, design scope, delivery, setup, rental stand, cutting instructions and any required fees. Then use the vendor comparison worksheet to compare the same design and service scope.
Browse wedding bakeries, Chicago bakeries or Dallas bakeries. Send the bakery inquiry template with your date, venue, planned servings and design priorities.
Save the calculation and confirm it
Download the CSV to preserve your assumptions and output. Entries stay in this page and are not saved to your account. Update the plan when attendance or the design changes, then confirm the final order deadline with the baker.
This is an original planning calculator, not a standardized cake-yield chart. A calculated portion target still needs a supplier-confirmed product and service plan.
